NHS Looks to Stop the Sale of Cheap Alcohol in Wales

A new detailed survey of the NHS staff in England published earlier this week shows deaths and heavy drinking are three times the Welsh average in certain deprived parts of the South Wales Valley. The statistics are believed to be the result of large amounts of 24-hour liquor stores and ridiculously cheap alcohol. The NHS also revealed that the annual death toll related to drinking was 1,000; a much higher number than previously recorded. The death toll is higher than the deaths related to traffic accidents and drugs combined.
As a result, the NHS is asking the government to step in and stop the 24-hour sales of cheap alcohol in Wales. Young teenagers in Wales have some of the highest drinking rates in Europe. Now, the NHS is convinced that the government will lose the battle against addiction and excessive drinking unless strict actions are taken to stop the sale of cheap alcohol
John Jenkins, of the British Medical Association in Wales said, “Doctors see first hand how alcohol misuse destroys lives. It causes family breakdowns, is a major factor in domestic violence, ruins job prospects, is often related to crime and disorderly behavior and it kills.”
